Sump Pump Check Valve: Signs It's Bad and How to Replace It
The check valve is a $20 part that decides how hard your sump pump works. Here is how to tell when it has failed, where it belongs, how much water a bad one sends back into the pit, and how to replace it yourself.

What a check valve does — and why a bad one wears out your pump
A sump pump check valve stops the water in the discharge pipe from falling back into the pit when the pump shuts off. If the pit refills an inch or two right after the pump stops, the pump short-cycles, or you hear a hard bang at shutoff, the valve is stuck, failing or missing. Replacement is a $20 to $80 part.
Every time the pump runs, it fills the discharge pipe with water on its way outside. When the float drops and the pump stops, that column of water is still standing in the pipe. With a working valve it stays there, ready for the next cycle. Without one, it runs straight back down into the pit — and the pump has to lift that same water again, often within minutes.
That matters because starting is what wears a pump out. Motors and switches have a finite number of cycles in them, and backflow can add a start for every start the pump actually needed.

How much water a bad valve sends back
The water that falls back is whatever sits in the pipe above the pump that can drain toward the pit. Here is how much that is, and how far it raises the water in a typical basin.

Schedule 40 PVC inside diameters; round basins. Count the vertical riser plus any horizontal pipe that slopes back toward the pit. 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches.
A 1½-inch discharge with 20 feet draining back returns about two gallons — close to two inches in a common 18-inch basin. Many float switches only drop the level a few inches per cycle, so two inches of backflow can be most of the way to the next start. That is the mechanism behind a pump that cycles every few minutes when it has not rained in a week.

Signs your check valve is bad, and what else it could be

The simplest test is to watch one cycle. Pour water in until the pump starts (the bucket test covers this), then shine a light on the water as the pump stops. A good valve closes with a click or a thud and the level stays put. A bad one lets the level climb back up within a few seconds.
Types
Swing, spring and ball check valves — and the valves people confuse them with
- Swing check valve. A hinged flapper that water pushes open. Cheapest and most common, often in a clear body with rubber couplings. It closes only when water starts flowing backward, which causes the thud at shutoff.
- Spring-loaded or “silent” check valve. A spring closes the disc as flow stops, before the water reverses, so it is quiet. Slightly more resistance to flow, and it can clog if the pit carries a lot of debris.
- Ball check valve. A ball that lifts off its seat with flow and drops back to seal. Stuck ball checks are usually debris or scale on the seat, and clear up when cleaned.
- Ball valve (not a check valve). A shutoff with a quarter-turn lever. Some installations have one above the check valve so the valve can be serviced without draining the line. It must be left fully open.
- Backflow preventer or backwater valve (not a check valve). Backflow preventers protect the drinking water supply; backwater valves stop sewage backing up into floor drains. Neither belongs on a sump discharge.
Placement
Where the check valve goes
The check valve goes on the vertical discharge pipe above the pump, most often just above the basin lid where you can reach it, with the flow arrow on the valve body pointing up and away from the pump. A union or the valve's own rubber couplings let it come out without cutting pipe.
Between the pump and the check valve, inside the basin, there should be a small relief hole. Zoeller's installation guide specifies a 3/16-inch hole in the pipe between the pump and the check valve; it lets trapped air escape so the pump does not air-lock and run without moving water. Installers commonly angle it downward so the small spray stays in the pit.

How to replace a sump pump check valve
- Unplug the pump. Do it from a dry spot, and keep the cord clear of the water.
- Get a bucket and towels ready. Everything above the valve — often a gallon or two — will come out when you open it.
- Loosen the clamps or union and remove the old valve. Note the arrow direction and pipe size before you take it to the store. 1¼ and 1½ inch are the common sizes; many valves come with adapters for both.
- Inspect the pipe. Clear any debris in the riser and check the weep hole is open. If there is no weep hole and the pump has ever run without pumping, ask whether one should be added per the pump's manual.
- Fit the new valve with the arrow pointing up and away from the pump. Seat the pipe fully into each coupling and tighten the clamps evenly — snug, not crushed.
- Plug the pump back in and run a full cycle with a bucket of water. Watch for leaks at the couplings, and confirm the pit level stays down after shutoff.

A replacement sump pump check valve commonly costs $20 to $80 for the part, depending on type and size, with silent spring valves at the upper end. Rule it out
When short-cycling is not the check valve
- The pump is oversized for the basin. A high-capacity pump in a small pit empties it in seconds. Check capacity against the sizing calculator.
- The float has too little travel. A float that switches over a short range starts and stops the pump on small level changes.
- Groundwater refills the pit quickly. If the pit fills from the drain tile inlet rather than the discharge pipe, the valve is fine and the water table is high.
- The discharge is frozen or blocked. The pump runs against a blockage and water returns. See frozen discharge lines.

Does a sump pump need a check valve?
Almost always. Without one, the water left in the discharge pipe falls back into the pit every time the pump stops, so the pump re-pumps the same water and starts more often, which shortens its life. A few installations with a very short discharge that drains away from the house can work without one, and some pumps have one built in, but a separate check valve is the standard setup.
How do I know if my sump pump check valve is bad?
Watch the pit right after the pump shuts off. If the water level jumps back up an inch or more within a few seconds, water is flowing back through the valve. Other signs are the pump short-cycling in dry weather, water visibly moving backward in a clear valve body, a leak at the valve's rubber couplings, or a pump that runs but moves no water because the valve is stuck shut or installed backwards.

Why does my sump pump check valve make a loud bang?
When the pump stops, the column of water in the discharge pipe starts to fall back and slams a swing-type flapper shut. That thud is water hammer, and it is common rather than a sign of failure. A spring-loaded or silent check valve closes before the water reverses and usually eliminates it.
How long does a sump pump check valve last?
Commonly five to ten years, depending on the valve type, water quality and how often the pump runs. Inspect it once a year when you test the pump, and replace it when it leaks back, sticks, cracks, or when you replace the pump.
