How to Test a Sump Pump (Before It Fails)
A sump pump can sit idle for months and only fail during the first heavy rain. Testing it takes five minutes with a bucket of water — here is the full check, what each result means, and what to do next.

To test a sump pump, slowly pour a 5-gallon bucket of water into the pit until the float rises. A working pump switches on, drains the pit quickly through the discharge line, then shuts off on its own. Before you test
Four quick safety checks
A sump pump combines water and electricity, so a few checks come first. Make sure the outlet is a working GFCI and reset it if it has tripped. Never reach into a pit or standing water with the pump plugged in if anything feels unsafe. Clear loose debris that could jam the float or the intake. And if the basin already holds a lot of water and the pump is not running, treat that as a possible failure and keep clear of standing water near the outlet until power is confirmed off from a dry location.
Beyond the switch
The 6-point pre-season check
Most guides stop once the pump turns on. Turning on is only one of the things that fails. Before storm season, walk through all six.
- The switch and float. The float should move freely and trigger the pump without being nudged. A float pressed against the basin wall is a common no-start cause.
- The check valve. The one-way valve on the discharge pipe should stop water from draining back into the pit. If the pit refills right after the pump stops, the valve may be stuck or missing.
- The discharge line. Follow it outside. A line that is crushed, clogged, or frozen in winter can stop a healthy pump from moving water and can send it back toward the foundation.
- The backup pump. If a battery or water-powered backup is installed, test it too and check the battery date. The backup is the whole point during a power outage.
- The weep (air-relief) hole. Many pumps have a small hole between the pump and the check valve to prevent air-lock. If it is clogged, the pump can run without pumping.
- The basin and power. Clear sediment and debris, and confirm the GFCI outlet is live and not sharing a tripped circuit.

Test quarterly — and before it matters most
Test the pump about once every three months, and add a test before storm season and after any power outage. A pump that has been idle through a dry spell can hide a stuck float or a failing motor until the first heavy rain, which is exactly when you least want to discover it. A two-minute quarterly test is cheap insurance against a flooded basement.

Testing without water — and the dry-run limit
If you cannot add water, you can lift the float by hand just until the motor starts, then lower it right away. Keep it brief — no more than two or three seconds. Running a sump pump dry for even 30 to 60 seconds can overheat and damage the motor, so the float-lift check confirms the motor starts but should never be held. Whenever possible, use the bucket test instead, because it also proves the pump moves water and the float responds on its own.
